USDA’s January 2025 Chickens and Eggs report showed that broiler-type chicks hatched during December 2024 increased by three percent from last year. Eggs in incubators totaled 746 million on January 1, 2025, which indicated an increase of four percent from a year ago. Leading breeders placed 9.14 billion broiler-type pullets during December 2024, a five percent decrease from December 2023.

In December 2024, total egg production in the United States reached 9.12 billion eggs, representing a three percent decrease compared to the previous year. This production consisted of 7.83 billion table eggs and 1.29 billion hatching eggs, which included 1.19 billion broiler-type eggs and 95.9 million egg-type eggs. The average number of layers in December 2024 was 373 million, also down three percent from the previous year. Additionally, the egg production per 100 layers for December was 2,448 eggs, reflecting a one percent decline from December 2023.

As of January 1, 2025, the total number of layers in the United States was 369 million, representing a two percent decrease from the previous year. This total included 304 million layers producing table or market-type eggs, 61.2 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.91 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. The average rate of lay per day on January 1, 2025, was 78.6 eggs per 100 layers, which is a one percent decline compared to January 1, 2024.
