USDA’s December 2024 Poultry Slaughter report showed that poultry certified wholesome in November 2024 totaled 4.09 billion pounds, a five percent decrease from the prior year.
The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during November 2024 was 5.39 billion pounds, down five percent from 5.69 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 4.83 billion pounds, a decrease of four percent from November 2023. Mature chickens, at 53.0 million pounds, were down 17 percent from the previous year.
Young chickens slaughtered during November 2024 averaged 6.63 pounds per bird, up slightly from November 2023. The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.88 pounds per bird, down one percent from a year ago.
Ante-mortem condemnations during November 2024 totaled 10.5 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.19 percent of the live weight inspected compared to 0.21 percent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 24.5 million pounds, were 0.59 percent of quantities inspected compared to 0.57 percent a year prior.
