USDA’s October 2024 poultry slaughter report indicated that the total ready-to-cook (RTC) weight for poultry certified wholesome increased by one percent from September 2023.
Additionally, the August 2024 revised certified total at 4.53 billion pounds was down four percent from August 2023. The August revision represented an increase of 14.5 million pounds from last month’s preliminary pounds certified.
The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during September 2024 was 5.74 billion pounds, up one percent from 5.66 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 5.14 billion pounds, up two percent from September 2023. Mature chickens, at 67.5 million pounds, were down three percent from the previous year.
Young chickens slaughtered during September 2024 averaged 6.68 pounds per bird, up one percent from September 2023. The average live weight of mature chickens was 7.17 pounds per bird, up one percent from a year ago.
Ante-mortem condemnations during September 2024 totaled 11.4 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.20 percent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.21 percent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 25.6 million pounds, were 0.58 percent of quantities inspected, as compared with 0.54 percent a year earlier.
