A collection of consumer food safety groups this week sent a letter to USDA formally requesting an extension to the “Salmonella Framework for Raw Poultry Products.”
“Stop Foodborne Illness (STOP), Consumer Reports, the Consumer Federation of America, and the Institue for Food Safety and Nutrition Security at The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health are writing to explain why we joined in the Poultry Safety Coalition’s recent request for an extension of the comment period on USDA’s Salmonella in poultry rulemaking,” the groups said. “We urge you to grant a six-month extension.”
The full letter can be found here.
The letter mirrors requests NCC and Congressional offices have made to USDA to extend the comment period.
NCC originally requested a 120-day comment period extension in an August letter and USDA granted a 30-day extension to November 7, 2024.
Highlighting the inadequacy of the 30-day extension USDA granted in response to NCC’s request, Congressional Chicken Caucus co-chairs Reps. Steve Womack and Jim Costa sent a letter on September 3 requesting a 180-day extension to the comments. USDA has yet to respond to this letter.
Following Reps. Costa and Womack’s request, NCC sent a follow-up letter in September requesting more time to comment, which can be found here.
