USDA reported this week in its monthly slaughter report that the April 2024 ready-to-cook weight (poultry certified wholesome) total was 4.43 billion pounds, up 10 percent from the same time in 2023.
The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during April 2024 was 5.82 billion pounds, up 10 percent from 5.31 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 5.17 billion pounds, up 10 percent from April 2023. Mature chickens, at 67.7 million pounds, were up seven percent from the previous year.
Young chickens slaughtered during April 2024 averaged 6.52 pounds per bird, up slightly from April 2023. The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.9 pounds per bird, up one percent from a year ago.
Ante-mortem condemnations during April 2024 totaled 11.9 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.20 percent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.21 percent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 26.8 million pounds, were 0.6 percent of quantities inspected, unchanged from a year earlier.
