A vote to remove Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) from his position failed miserably this week on the House floor in an effort led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).

Rep. Greene requested a vote on a so-called “motion to vacate,” which would remove the Speaker from his position and set up a replacement vote, late in the week.

The House voted 359-43 and seven present on a “motion to table” the resolution that would have declared the office of the Speaker of the House vacant. Thus, 43 members, including 11 Republicans and 32 Democrats, voted “yes,” which would’ve brought the resolution to oust Speaker Johnson to the floor for an up-or-down vote.

Those Republicans include Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Eric Burlison (R-MO), Ben Crane (R-AZ), Warren Davidson (R-OH), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Thomas Massie (R-KY), Alex Mooney (R-WV), Barry Moore (R-AL), Chip Roy (R-TX), and Victoria Spartz (R-IN).

Ultimately, there were 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats that voted to keep Johnson as Speaker of the House.

“I appreciate the show of confidence from my colleagues to defeat this misguided effort,” Speaker Johnson said of the vote. “Hopefully, this is the end of the personality politics and the frivolous character assassination that has defined the 118th Congress. It’s regrettable. It’s not who we are as Americans, and we’re better than this. We need to get beyond it.”
