The April Consumer Price Index (CPI) detailing the prior month showed an increase of 0.4 percent from February to March, the same level of increase that occurred from January to February. Thus, the CPI has increased by 0.8 percent over the last two months.
The indexes for shelter, motor vehicle insurance, medical care, apparel, and personal care increased over the past month. Cars & trucks, recreation, and new vehicles decreased over the past month.
The Shelter and Gasoline indexes rose in March, contributing over half the monthly increase for all items. The energy index rose 1.1 percent over the month. The Food index rose 0.1 percent, the food at home index remained unchanged, and food away from home rose 0.3 percent over the month.
The Meats, Poultry, Fish, and Eggs index rose 0.9 percent in March. The index for eggs rose 4.6 percent from the prior month and 5.8 percent for the year. Chicken increased by 1.8 percent from the past month, but decreased by 1.3 percent on the year.
