North Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama, and Texas were the top five states for liveweight broiler production last year, accounting for 55.5 percent of total U.S. federally inspected production, down slightly from 55.7 percent in 2022. These five states had a combined production of 34.047 billion pounds in 2023, 0.1 percent less than the 34.082 billion pounds in 2022.

Total federally inspected broiler production last year was 61.376 billion pounds, 0.3 percent above the 61.183 billion pounds in 2022.

Ten states registered increases in production while six states slipped in output. PA lead with a 7.0 percent gain, followed by TN with 5.5 percent, MS with 4.2 percent, and KY with 4.1 percent.

Ante-mortem condemnations as a percent of live weight condemned in 2023 was 0.20 compared with 0.21 in 2022. Post-mortem condemnations last year were 0.46 percent compared with 0.49 percent during the previous year.

The dressing percentage or yield from liveweight to pounds certified as wholesome was 71.5 percent for both 2022 and 2023.

Federally inspected number of broilers in 2023 totaled 9.381 billion having a liveweight of 61.376 billion pounds compared with 9.431 billion birds weighing 61.183 billion pounds, 0.5 percent fewer head but 0.3 percent more pounds when compared with 2022.
