The outlook for U.S. poultry exports in the coming year is positive as the EU struggles to manage widespread highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks, particularly in northern and western countries.

“After seeing the end of the year statistics for 2020, exports was probably one of the brightest aspects of broiler marketing. It was the one sector that actually exceeded our expectations,” said James H. Sumner, President & CEO, USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC).

Sumner will discuss the export prospects for the U.S. as the industry and the country emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and the global poultry industry adjusts to higher feed costs at the 2021 Chicken Marketing Summit.

“We’re looking at a very good year for exports – probably one of our stronger years,” he added, noting that there was a particularly strong export demand from key markets like China and Cuba.

HPAI outbreaks affecting trade in Europe

Europe recorded more than 440 HPAI outbreaks in 2020. These outbreaks impact poultry trade patterns globally.

“The rest of the world is probably having the worst year ever for HPAI. For example, there are 25 EU countries currently with HPAI problems. The U.S. has low pathogenic incidence in California but other than that, we are ahead of the world and in good shape,” Sumner said.

“One of the advantages the U.S. has now is that we do not have any HPAI. We need to make sure we keep it that way.”
