The U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s draft report webcast meeting, originally scheduled for Monday, June 8, will now take place via webcast on Wednesday, June 17, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. EDT, according to a notice from the Committee. Registration will open soon.
The meeting will include updates on the Committee’s draft conclusion statements and Committee deliberations and decisions regarding their draft advisory report. Organized by life stage, the advisory report summarizes the Committee’s evidence review and provides overarching advice to USDA and HHS based on the consideration of all of their conclusions statements.
The Committee will finalize their report based on the meeting discussion and submit their final advisory report to the Secretaries of USDA and HHS at the end of June 2020. USDA and HHS will post the final report online, send out public notification, and open a new public comment period on or around July 15, 2020 for the Departments to accept comments on the Committee’s advice. USDA and HHS will consider the Committee’s report, along with public and agency comments, as the Departments develop the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for release by the end of this year.
The Dietary Guidelines are the cornerstone of Federal nutrition policy and nutrition education activities, providing food-based recommendations to promote health, help prevent diet-related disease, and meet nutrient needs. USDA and HHS jointly publish the Dietary Guidelines every 5 years. They serve as a central source of guidance that nutrition programs within the government can use to inform their food and nutrition programs and initiatives while tailoring their efforts for their specific audiences.
