A bipartisan group of 47 members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday wrote to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue to request that USDA provide direct assistance for chicken farmers impacted by COVID-19 through the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) or any further supplemental monies that USDA may be appropriated in future legislation.

The letter was spearheaded by Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.) and Rep. Trent Kelly (R-Miss.).

“The challenges faced by chicken processing facilities impact the entire supply chain, including the independent family farmers in our districts who raise chickens,” the members wrote. “This is beginning to have serious effects on bird placements to family farms. As these farmers cope with raising fewer chickens among changing and uncertain demand, we believe it is essential that they be provided with direct financial assistance.”
