U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) on Monday led a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue requesting direct financial assistance for chicken farmers and continued support for processing facilities.
“As representatives of states with substantial chicken operations, we strongly request that USDA provide direct assistance for chicken farmers impacted by COVID-19 and continue to provide support for chicken processing facilities,” the letter read.
A bipartisan group of 16 senators joined Coons and Wicker in signing the letter, including Senators Doug Jones (D-AL), John Boozman (R-AR), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Tom Carper (D-DE), Kelly Loeffler (R-GA), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Richard Burr (R-NC), James Lankford (R-OK), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Tim Scott (R-SC), John Cornyn (R-TX) and Mark Warner (D-VA).
