The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released earlier this month the results of the 2017 Census of Agriculture, which shows that broiler meat is the number one agricultural commodity by sales in ten states.
The census, which spans some 6.4 million new points of information about America’s farms and ranches and those who operate them, provides insights into demographics, economics, land, and activities on U.S. farms and ranches, including the production and sales of broiler meat.
In terms of percentage of the state’s total agricultural sales for 2017 and the total dollar value of those sales, the top ten producers of broiler meat are: Georgia (47%, $4.49 billion), Arkansas (54%, $5.21 billion), North Carolina (28%, $3.66 billion), Alabama (57%, $3.45 billion), Mississippi (42%, $2.62 billion), Virginia (34%, $1.38 billion), Delaware (71%, $1.05 billion), Maryland (42%, $1.04 billion), South Carolina (33%, $995 million), and West Virginia (52%, $396 million).
