President Trump said on Thursday that he would delay closing the border with Mexico for a year.  The president told reporters at the White House that he would give Mexico a year to halt the flow of illegal drugs coming into the United States.

If the smuggling of drugs does not stop, the president said the United States would impose tariffs on Mexican autos.  If that does not work, the president said the U.S. would close the U.S.-Mexican border.During a trip to Florida last week,  President Trump warned that there is a “very good likelihood that he would close the border if Mexico does not do more to stem the influx of migrant families arriving from Central America.

President Trump’s remarks are the latest signal that the administration is toning down its rhetoric after days of attacking Mexico over illegal border crossings.
