Sanderson Farms has closed on 550 acres in Smith County, Texas, where it intends to construct a a state-of-the-art poultry processing complex and hatchery, as well as a feed mill. Construction of the facilities is slated to begin in late 2017 or early 2018. The Smith County Commission has approved a 10-year tax abatement package for the company.
Once completed, at full production, the facility will process 1.25 million pounds of poultry per week. Approximately 1,700 new jobs will be created and about 80 new contract growers will be necessary.
