A bipartisan group of representatives of the Georgia Congressional Delegation, led by U.S. Representative Austin Scott (GA-08), today sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, urging him to rescind Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) rules issued in the 11th hour of the Obama Administration that would inflict billions of dollars of economic harm to American agriculture, exceed GIPSA’s statutory authority, and represent an arbitrary and capricious abuse of federal regulatory authority.
“I want to thank Rep. Scott for his leadership on this issue and the members of the Georgia delegation for recognizing this is a complicated and controversial issue with deep economic consequences for American poultry and livestock producers,” said NCC President Mike Brown. “NCC sends our strong support in urging Secretary Perdue to rescind these draconian rules.”
Joining Rep. Scott on today’s letter were Representatives Rick Allen, (GA-12), Buddy Carter (GA-01), Doug Collins (GA-09), Tom Graves (GA-14), Jody Hice (GA-10), Barry Loudermilk (GA-11), David Scott (GA-13), Rob Woodall (GA-07), and Drew Ferguson (GA-03).
“We urge you to promote American business, eliminate stifling regulation, and make a clear statement of support for American agriculture by rescinding the GIPSA interim final rule and withdrawing the two GIPSA proposed rules,” wrote the Members. “Even based on GIPSA’s own analysis, these rules are completely out of line with our priorities to eliminate burdensome regulations and to promote American businesses. Rescinding the rules would allow livestock and poultry producers to market their animals how, when, and where they want to without GIPSA dictating the transactions.”
