The Georgia Department of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that the Georgia Premium Poultry Price Index will not be published as a result of lack of participation and insufficient data.

The new Georgia Premium Poultry Price Index was released in January by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and included a series of producer price indexes that measured the aggregate change in the price of poultry sold on contract over one-month, six-month and 12-month base periods.  It called for random reviews to verify all data.

The new Georgia Premium Poultry Price Index was developed when the Georgia Department of Agriculture suspended its previous index, the Georgia Dock, in December last year.  The Georgia Dock was suspended based on a lack of adequate producer participation and concerns about price validity.  That suspension lead the Georgia Department of Agriculture to develop the new price index to replace the Georgia Dock.

Industry expert Tom Elam told Meatingplace that the departure of Georgia’s Department of Agriculture from price discovery efforts meant that only Express Markets, Urner Barry, and USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service will complete for price discovery.
