September is National Chicken Month, so the U.S. Census Bureau has compiled some statistics to help put some perspective on why National Chicken Month matters.
Clearly, Americans clearly love chicken, so the U.S. Census Bureau has compiled the following statistics to help put some perspective on why National Chicken Month counts:
- Domestic demand for chicken exceeds 40 million pounds annually
- Boiler production has doubled since 1990
- U.S. consumers eat about 90 pounds of chicken per capita each year
- Chicken makes up about 43 percent of the combined annual consumption of red meat, pork and poultry
- Georgia, Arkansas and Alabama are the top three chicken-producing U.S. states, in order
- The U.S. chicken industry is valued at about $61 billion per year
