Administrator of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service Alfred V. Almanza has been named deputy under secretary for food safety. Almanza will work alongside Brian Ronholm, who will also have the title of deputy under secretary. Ronholm has been serving as the acting under secretary since Elisabeth Hagen left the post in December 2013.
Almanza was appointed as administrator of FSIS in 2010. Prior to that appointment, he was the district manager for the Dallas District where he provided leadership and direction to more than 600 employees located in more than 350 federally inspected establishments. His career with FSIS began in 1978 as a food inspector in a small slaughter plant in Dalhart, Texas. Subsequently, he served as deputy district manager, labor management relations specialist, and processing inspector.
