McDonald’s has announced plans to test foods that would increase the number of healthy and wholesome choices on its menu in the new year. Among the additions being tested are  grilled chicken choices for Happy Meals; a new McWrap, inspired by McDonald’s Europe, that would feature fresh vegetables and available in three flavors–chicken and bacon, sweet chili chicken, and chicken and ranch–starting at 350 calories.  More seasonal fruit and vegetables options will be tested, such as blueberries and cucumbers, during peak seasons; additional produce side options and new breakfast choices, including an egg-white breakfast sandwich on an English muffin made with 8 grams of whole grain, will also be tested.

“We’ve made a lot of good progress toward our nutrition commitments and we recognize there’s still more to do,” said Cindy Goody, senior director of nutrition for McDonald’s USA. “As we continue to accelerate our nutrition-related efforts, we’re dedicated to offering balanced menu options and making nutrition information accessible to employees of McDonald’s and its franchisees, as well as today’s busy customers.”

The company also plans, later this fall, to enroll some 750,000 employees working in U.S. restaurants in a nutrition e-learning program designed to help customers with calorie and nutrition questions about McDonald’s menu. It already launched a mobile app last year that has provided more than 290,000 people so far with nutrition information about its menu, the company noted.
