Georgia and Alabama were the top two states for hatching broiler chicks in 2011, according to Hatchery Production 2011 Summary issued this week by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.  Georgia with 1,412,278,000 chicks hatched accounted for 15.6 percent of the total U.S. broiler chicks hatched last year while Alabama’s hatchings of 1,255,754,000 chicks represented 13.9 percent of the U.S. total.   Georgia increased hatchings in 2011 by 2.2 percent while Alabama slipped 3.7 percent.

Four of the 16 individually-listed states increased their hatchings last year compared with 2010.  States with percentage increases were Pennsylvania, 3.0 percent; North Carolina, 2.3 percent; Georgia, 2.2 percent; and Florida, 0.8 percent.  Broiler chicks hatched in the United States in 2011 totaled 9,055,976,000, 2.4 percent less than the 9,276,240,000 in 2010.  The 19 states in the NASS weekly hatchery estimating program accounted for 96.7 percent of the U.S. total in 2011, the same percentage as in 2010.
