The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is extending the comment period 60 days on its proposed rule “Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food,” according to its May 20th Constituent Update.  The comment period was scheduled to end May 31, 2014.

The proposed rule appeared in the February 5, 2014 issue of the Federal Register.  FDA held three public meetings on the proposed rule and is taking this action it said in response to requests for additional time to submit comments.

The proposed rule would require certain shippers, receivers, and carriers who transport food by motor or rail vehicles to take steps to prevent the contamination of human and animal food during transportation.  It would establish criteria for sanitary transportation practices, such as properly refrigerating food, adequately cleaning vehicles between loads, and properly protecting food during transportation.

The National Chicken Council is currently drafting comments on the proposed rule.
