Sales of organic products hit $35.1 billion in 2013, up 11.5 percent from the year before, marking the fastest growth rate in the sector in the past five years, according to research released today from the Organic Trade Association (OTA).  Of that amount, the vast majority, $32.3 billion, were in food sales.

The biggest sector of the industry remains the fruit and vegetable category, which had $11.6 billion in sales, up 15 percent over 2012. Sales of organic meat, poultry, and fish increased 11 percent to $675 million in 2013, OTA reported. Organic snack foods also saw strong growth, up 15 percent to $1.7 billion.
