Total U.S. exports of poultry, egg, and related products for 2013 were a record $5.90 billion, 0.7 percent higher than the $5.86 billion in 2013. Poultry meat accounted for most of the overall category’s value with $0.77 billion last year, 0.5 percent less than $5.105 billion year earlier. Prepared poultry and sausages increased 16.7 percent in value. Live poultry exports were up 0.4 percent while egg and egg products were off 0.6 percent and feathers and down decreased 33.2 percent when 2013 is compared with 2012.

Within the overall poultry category, chicken exports in December last year decreased 10.0 percent in quantity and fell 14.3 percent in value, over a year earlier. Exports totaled 279,382 metric tons valued at $336.21 million in December 2013 compared with 310,346 tons valued at $392.12 million in December 2012. Within the chicken category, chicken parts decreased 11.0 percent in quantity and were down 16.0 percent in value. On the other hand, prepared chicken and sausages registered an 11.9 percent increase in quantity and a 6.5 percent gain in value. Whole chicken exports were up 12.0 percent in quantity but down 5.1 percent in value when December 2013 is compared with December 2012.

Mexico in December 2013 was again the leading parts market with 47,958 metric tons valued at $48.45 million, a 1.5-percent increase in tonnage but a 4.6 percent decrease in dollars. Angola, the second largest parts market, took 20,056 tons valued at $20.86 million, a 45.9 percent increase in quantity and a 20.0 percent increase in value. Hong Kong, the third largest parts destination in December last year, had a 41.8 percent increase in tonnage and a 59.1 percent increase in value.

The top 15 parts markets had a 1.2 percent decreases in tonnage and a 6.9 percent slippage in value while “other countries” were off 29.8 percent in quantity and down 34.3 percent in value when December 2013 is compared with December 2012. Eight of the top 15 parts markets last December registered increases in quantity while 6 markets had increases in value.

Chicken exports last year posted no change in quantity and a 0.6 percent increase in value. For January-December 2013, chicken exports totaled 3,722,332 metric tons valued at $4,783.76 million compared with 3,721,016 tons valued at $4,755.90 million during 2012.

Within the overall chicken category, parts during January-December were 3,535,978 metric tons valued at $4,325.68 million compared with 3,570,077 tons valued at $4,367.81 million, a 1.0 percent decrease in quantity and a 1.0 percent decrease in value. The other two subcategories reported positive, more impressive results. Prepared chicken and sausages were 108,120 tons valued at $345.87 million, 16.5 percent more than the 92,812 tons during January-December 2012 and 13.2 percent above $305.48 million a year earlier. Whole chicken exports recorded strong growth with 78,234 tons valued at $112.21 million compared with 58,127 tons valued at $82.61 million, increases of 34.6 percent and 35.8 percent for quantity and value, respectively, when January-December 2013 is compared with January-December 2012.

Mexico was clearly the leading parts destination during January-December 2013 with 608,070 tons valued at $666.52 million, a 13.9 percent increase in quantity and a 14.6 percent increase in value. China was the second largest parts market last year when measured in tonnage while Russia was third largest. Canada is the second largest parts market when measured in value.

Together, the 15 largest parts countries had a  1.4 percent increase in quantity and a 1.5 percent increase in value. On the other hand, “other countries” experienced a  6.1-percent decrease in quantity and a 6.6-percent decrease in value. Eight of the top 15 parts markets had increases in both quantity and value during January-December 2013.
