The Congressional Chicken Caucus continued its series of briefings today with an educational session for congressional staff and members on immigration reform and what is at stake for the chicken industry.

National Chicken Council President Mike Brown and the Food Manufacturer’s Immigration Coalition representative Carl Hampe provided an overview of important aspects of immigration reform that must be addressed in the comprehensive legislation Congress is drafting.  Specific topics covered included E-Verify; identity theft; access to a consistent labor force and “future flow” implications; as well as a “safe harbor” for employers during and after the hiring process.

Approximately 50 individuals attended the briefing, which was followed by a question and answer session during which a number of issues were discussed, including the government’s role in proposed fixes to identity theft, the shortfalls of E-Verify, the repercussions companies face when hiring illegal workers, as well as some privacy concerns.
