Chicken exports in June 2013 increased 10.2 percent in quantity and gained 11.5 percent in value over a year earlier. Exports totaled 324,803 metric tons valued at $420.58 million this June compared with 294,841 tons valued at $377.07 million in June 2012. Within the overall chicken category, chicken parts rose 8.1 percent in quantity and were up 9.3 percent in value. Prepared chicken and sausages registered gains of 41.7 percent and 22.9 percent in quantity and value, respectively. Whole chickens increased significantly with quantity up 101.5 percent from a year earlier and value increased 100.4 percent from June 2012.

Chicken exports during first-half of this year posted a 2.1 percent gain in quantity and a 2.8 percent rise in value. For January-June 2013, chicken exports totaled 1,844,781 tons valued at $2,384.79 million compared with 1,806,722 tons valued at $2,319.43 million during the same six months a year earlier.

Within the overall chicken category, parts during January-June 2013 were 1,747,575 tons valued at $2,153.52 million compared with 1,738,241 tons valued at $2,138.90 million, a 0.5 percent increase in quantity and a 0.7 percent increase in value. The other two sub-categories reported positive results, too. Prepared chicken and sausages were 54,435 tons valued at $168.01 million, 20.4 percent more than the 45,209 tons during January-June 2012 and 13.3 percent above $148.33 million year earlier. Whole chicken exports continued to experience strong growth with 42,771 tons valued at $63.26 million so far this year compared with 23,272 tons valued at $32.20 million last year during the first six months, increases of 83.8 percent and 96.5 percent for quantity and value, respectively.

Chicken parts exports to the top four markets, Mexico, Russia, China, and Angola in June 2013 all registered increases in both quantity and value. Mexico was the top destination with a 25.3 percent increase in quantity and a 24.8 percent increase in value. Next top market, Russia had gains in quantity of 83.6 percent and an increase of 84.4 percent in value. China’s increases were 34.4 percent for quantity and 40.5 percent for value. Angola, the fourth largest parts destination during the first six months of this year, experienced a 10.6 percent increase in quantity and a 13.0 percent increase in value when June 2013 parts exports are compared with June 2012. Parts exports to Hong Kong, the fifth largest market in June, were down 5.1 percent in quantity and off 7.4 percent in value.
