Chicken exports in February 2013 decreased  10.2 percent in quantity and declined 8.2 percent in value. Exports totaled 295,491 metric tons valued at $375.50 million this February compared with 329,147 tons valued at $408.96 million in February 2012. Chicken parts were down 10.9 percent in quantity and also down 9.3 percent in value, while prepared chicken and sausages registered gains of 7.4 percent and 5.2 percent in quantity and value respectively. Whole chicken also gained with quantity up 8.0 percent from a year earlier and value increasing 8.7 percent from February 2012.

Chicken exports during the first two months of this year were off 5.1 percent in quantity and slipped 1.9 percent in value. For January-February 2013 chicken exports totaled 561,672 tons valued at $723.69 million. Within the overall chicken category, parts during January-February 2013 were 537,144 tons valued at $659.41 million compared with 569,519 tons valued at $679.50 million, a 5.7 percent decline in quantity and 3.0 percent less in value. However, the other sub-categories reported positive results. Prepared chicken and sausages were 14,956 tons valued at $48.98 million, 2.8 percent more than the 14,555 yons during January-February 2012 and 4.1 percent above $47.07 million year earlier. Whole chicken exports experienced growth with 9,572 tons valued at $15.13 million so far this year compared with 7,711 tons valued at $11.12 million last year during the first two months.

Chicken parts exports to the top two markets (Mexico and China) in February 2013 registered increases in both quantity and value. Mexico was the top destination with a 6.5 percent increase in quantity and a 9.6 percent increase in value. Next top market, China, had impressive triple-digit gains in both quantity and value, with a 130.7 percent increase in quantity and a 118.4 percent increase in value. Parts exports to Russia, the third largest market in February, were down 5.3 percent in quantity and off 1.5 percent in value.
