Cargill, Inc. is building a $250 million poultry roasting facility in China, in what will be one of the country’s biggest integrated chicken plants, according to a report in the Minneapolis St Paul Business Journal. Cargill says it will raise 65 million birds a year at the plant. An official, speaking at an industry event in Thailand, said the investment reflects a growing trend of increased use of technology in poultry production in China. China is the world’s biggest meat consumer, but per-capita chicken consumption is higher in places like Taiwan. The Chinese government sees that changing, however, as rising incomes help people afford store-bought chicken.
