South Korea has indicated its intentions to issue a temporary duty-free import quota for 50,000 metric tons of chicken, one million breeder chicks, and 50,000 tons of “ingredients for livestock processing.”  The total quota is reported to be 110,000 tons of poultry and livestock products.  In 2010, the United States exported 71,069 tons of chicken to South Korea with a value of $87.8 million.  South Korea’s action is a part of the government’s effort to help stabilize food prices that have been impacted by significant domestic animal disease problems, primarily avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease.  A Foreign Agricultural Service official explained to NCC that South Korea’s announced intentions will not become official until the report is published in the government’s official gazette.  No timetable for the publication in the gazette was available.
